NCERT- CLASS 11- ANSWERS

QUESTION:

The episode has been narrated in a light vein. What social mores does the author seem to ridicule?

ANSWER:

Section 1: Background Context:

Ramanand is a kind of person who bends, but won’t break. Without compromising on his pride, he will alter his values as per the need. The author mocks people who fall prey to their very own social stature, in an attempt to protect their past. As per author, such people are just fools, who are completely unaware of the practical affairs and are constantly trying to feed their image.

Section 2: Explanation:

A cunning person like Ramanand would customize his values based on his current situation, without compromising much on his pride. He is just taking advantage of the fools who are struck with their social status and are willing to compromise their present life for protecting their past. Here the author has ridiculed such people who fall because of their insensibilities.

Section 3: Direct Answer:

The author has mocked the current society that we live in and its people who live in false pride of their lineage or community. How foolish a man must be to just go and auction his actual possessions? And no wonder that smarter people like Ramanand take advantage of their foolishness.
