It is simply a term used to denote 9 types of words which are classified based on their function in sentences. It is the basis for forming meaningful English sentences.
1. NOUN:
- It can be a name of a person, place, animal or thing.
- It is classified into proper noun, common noun, abstract noun and collective noun.
- All proper nouns must be capitalized.
- Examples: India, ship, Gandhi, joy, pirate, family.
2. PRONOUN:
- It is used as a substitute in a sentence for enhancing its readability.
- It is primarily used to avoid repetition and reduce complexity of the sentence.
- It can be categorized as Personal pronoun, possessive pronoun, demonstrative pronoun, indefinite pronoun, interrogative pronoun, reflexive pronoun, relative pronoun and reciprocal pronoun.
- Examples: He, she, it, ours, them, I, you, they, we.
3. VERB:
- It indicates an action or state of being.
- It is subject to change based upon the subject and tenses.
- Various types include transitive verb, intransitive verb, auxiliary verb and modal verb.
- Examples: sing, sings, sung, be, become.
4. ADJECTIVE:
- It is used to describe a noun or pronoun.
- It is of various types such as Adjectives of quality, quantity and number.
- Examples: hungry, many, one, enough, five, honest.
5. ADVERB:
- It is used to describe a verb.
- It primarily answers when, where, why, how and how much.
- Types of it includes Adverbs of place, time, frequency, degree, manner and reason.
- Examples: softly, slowly, often.
6. PREPOSITION:
- It shows relation between the noun and other words in a sentence.
- Examples: up, over, against, by, for.
7. CONJUNCTION:
- It joins the various words, phrases and clauses in a sentence.
- Examples: and, but, or, so, yet, because.
8. ARTICLE:
- It is a word that is used with a noun.
- It helps to point out or refer to nouns in the sentence.
- It is divided into 2 main types namely definite and indefinite article.
- Examples: a, an, the.
9. INTERJECTION:
- It helps to express various feelings and emotions.
- It is indicated using various independent exclamatory words.
- Examples: ah, whoops, ouch.
The above-said parts of speech could be identified through their meaning, position and use in a particular sentence. (e.g.) work. It can be used either as a noun, verb or an adjective. While using the various Parts of Speech in a sentence they can be used in one of the following formations:
i. Noun+Verb
ii. Verb alone
iii. Interjection alone
iv. Combinations of all the above.
