MDMK’s
(MarumalarchiDravidarMunnetraKazhagam) general secretary Vaiko was convicted of
sedition today by a Chennai’s special court. This sentence is for a
controversial speech that he made in the year 2009 against the Union
government. The court sentenced him to a 1-year jail term along with a fine of
Rs. 10,000.
The case was filed against him in
the year 2010 by DMK party, for the speech that he made during the launch of
his Tamil book “Naan KutramSattugiren” (which means ‘I accuse’ in English),
held at Rani Seethai Hall on 15th of July 2009. For it, a case was
filed against him by Thousand Lights police under IPC section 124(A).
The hearing for this case took
place in a special court for elected representatives headed by Special
Magistrate J.Santhi. She held him guilty and hence convicted him towards his sedition
charges.
However the Judge Santhi,
temporarily suspended the sentence, so as to enable him to file an appeal soon
before the Madras High Court. Whether the stalwart will ward off this grief by
proving him innocent in the re-appeal is yet to be seen.
Here it is to be noted that, the
same DMK and MDMK were in alliance recently in the Union elections 2019. It
actually proves that there are no permanent allies or enemies in the political
sphere for sure…
