I don’t agree with this particular statement. Because, according to my view right after the
introduction of IPL, similar leagues have started sprouting in several other
sports as well thereby giving a problem of plenty for the selectors of our
various national teams. Moreover, all these years it has been the Ranji trophy
which was seen as the standard yardstick for unearthing raw domestic talent.
After the advent of IPL, several unknown players from the league have come to spotlight and made the spot as their own
in the Indian national cricket team such
as Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Murali Vijay, Yuzvendra Chahal and the
list goes on and on. Similarly, ISL has
helped talented players such as Seiminlen Doungel, Jerry Lalrinzuala, Udanta
Singh, Lalruatthara and many such players to gain visibility and draw
selector's attention.
Not only IPL but also other
sports leagues such as ISL, Pro-Kabaddi league, Hockey India League, Premier
badminton league have also gained popularity these days. These domestic leagues
have helped our budding Indian sportsmen to
rub their shoulders with international veterans thereby increasing their
exposure and confidence levels. By practising
with champions and experienced professionals our Indian athletes get the
opportunity to know what it takes to excel in International arena and tune
their mindset in accordance with it.
An additional perk that our sports personnel get by participating in
these domestic leagues is the valuable assistance of world-class coaching staff available with their team for that
particular season. A classic example is the recently concluded Indian Super
League during which we saw international coaches such as Albert Roca, John
Gregory, Sergio Lobera and Steve Coppell to name a few in action providing
valuable tips for our budding football stars.
Therefore, in my opinion, frankly
speaking, we as a country have not performed well in sports all these years and
the situation is fast changing in the past few years only after the
introduction of various domestic Indian leagues. And hence, the contribution
made by these domestic tournaments and the positive impact they have had on our
Indian Sports can simply not be neglected.
