Question:  Would you agree that the 'depths of oppression' create 'heights of character'? How does Mandela illustrate this? Can you add your own examples to this argument?

Answer:

Section 1: Background Context

Of course, depths of oppression could pave the way to heights of character. Nelson Mandela highlighted it by naming a few great warriors who laid down their lives in their combat against racism. Too much of dominance always develop grit and determination among human beings. By quoting the deceased heroes, Mandela concludes that unbearable oppression is the sole reason for the birth of men with unmatched wisdom and courage. Our mother country too had many such brave men who came to the foray because of the domination of the British rulers. It is no wonder that such men brought an end to the British tyranny in India later.

Section 2: Explanation

It is general psychology of humans to act as per the situation, that they are currently in. Consistent oppression could trigger a sudden character change in certain individuals. In the same manner, Nelson Mandela and his other patriots, who were victims of constant oppression, garnered some great virtues such as courage, generosity and bravery. They were bold enough to fight for the well-being of their country’s citizens. As a matter of fact, a brutal massacre of people without any valid reason could inculcate fears in the minds of common men or it could lead to a great historic turn-around as what Mandela had accomplished in this particular case.

Section 3: Direct Answer

Yes, I completely agree with it. Only normal people get intimidated by immense oppression. But, real men would indeed strengthen their character, when subjected to peaks of oppression. To be frank, Gandhiji wouldn’t have become Mahatma, had it not for the British oppression. In the same way, Mandela shaped and refined his character through apartheid oppression. Mandela, himself, praising his fellow-men like Walter Sisulus, Oliver Tambos, Chief Luthulis, Bram Fischers, Yusuf Dadoos and Robert Sobukwes bears testimony to this fact.
