In the last few weeks, we have been discussing about the mistakes done by a photographer as a beginner. I got a message from a viewer requesting for suggestions to improve on editing. That is a very good question. Because as a beginner, either the mistake committed by me or those done by others is "Over-editing", which is also widely done by several other photographers as well as a beginner. We may think that the photograph is good, but the same will be called as 'over-edited pics' by others. So, there is one point where we cannot differentiate between which is good editing and which is bad editing. So to resolve this, an important aspect is having a mentor. That is what I think is very important. So, choose a senior photographer in your field. Definitely, we will atleast follow 100 people. Of them, choose 5 persons and send them personal messages. I have personally guided many people by pointing out over saturated images, as most of us will commit the very same mistake of increasing the saturation excessively or over smoothing the face.

Instead of maintaining the balance between natural and edited pictures, we tend to cross the border and over edit the pictures. Actually, we should maintain the natural look and at the same time, add some beauty through editing. Choose a mentor for you and that mentor can be anybody. And, if it is a photographer it is good. But even if they are not a photographer, their views will be correct even as a general audience. They can say that it is good or bad. But, they may not be in a position to help you out in correcting them. You can search through Google or learn in Youtube.

But, I would say prefer having a mentor, who is a photographer. Just ping the person whom you like the most and follow. Take guidance from them. And assist them after knowing the proper way of editing. Of all that, you are not a editor. You are a photographer. Keep that in mind. When I was in learning period, the first and foremost thing taught by my senior to me was to not think about editing and post production when you are at field. It was indeed a big lesson for me. I am implementing it even till now. Even my fellow teammates will say that they can cover the glitches through editing, which I never will follow.

We should give our maximum during production. So, when we are taking a particular shot, we must put maximum effort at the time of shooting. Editing is only just 10% to add beauty to it. Keep that in mind. Whatever you are doing, give your best, give your 100% while you are shooting. Keep editing just as an addon. Make the pictures beautiful through editing. But, don't just rely too much on editing. Hence using editing to ompletely change the background or location is advisable only during critical situations, but not for all the images.

Remember you are a photographer. You are not an editor. And use editing as a tool to enhance beauty of the pictures. I am Sharadha Gopalakrishnan. Someone who takes you back in time. Bye... Bye...
